Mobile Tag Reader Installation on a Vehicle

Tag Reader Overview

The Troverlo Mobile Tag Reader uses GPS to acquire the location of your vehicles or equipment, Wi-Fi to detect Troverlo Asset Tags that are passed in your route and Cellular to communicate the data to the Troverlo Platform.

The primary parts are the Tag Reader, the 3-1 antenna (ie the puck), and the power connection.

Installation

Tools Needed

  • Drill
  • Metal Drill Bits
  • Screws
  • 10-18 Gauge Wire
  • Nut & Bold for Attaching Ground
  • Wire Connectors

1. Hardwire power connection to ensure the Tag Reader is powered when the vehicle is powered.
The power connector is able to convert 12v vehicle batteries down to the 5v required by the Tag Reader.

  • Power should be spliced into circuits that are powered when the vehicle is powered. An example is the cigarette lighter
  • The Tag Reader should be placed inside the cab. Punchouts under back seats can be used to run wire to the front power connection and to the antenna.

2. Place Tag Reader where it is easily accessible.

To troubleshoot Tag Reader issues, it is best to have easy visibility of the light at the top of the Tag Reader. The below table can be used to determine how the Tag Reader is working.

Note: the Tag Reader typically takes 1-2 minutes to connect to the internet via LTE-m once powered.

3. The antenna should be placed near the rear of the vehicle (if possible) with visibility to the sky.

This provides better visibility to the assets that are being tracked and ensures the Tag Reader is able to get a GPS signal.

  • The antenna can be attached to the roof or roll bar (if available) of the truck.
  • If attached to the roof, the rear light can be removed to give access to the roof and enable cabling to run inside the cab.
  • If attached to the roll bar or another area at the rear of the vehicle, antenna cabling can run into the cab through the rear punch-hole.
Note: There is an adhesive on the bottom of the antenna that can be used to ensure a watertight seal over the hole drilled for cabling

4. Connect 3-1 antenna cables to the Tag Reader.

Check that the cables are connected to the correct port on the Tag Reader. Please use the diagram below as a guide.
